Cap and share is a system which keeps fossil fuels in the ground and shares real wealth with people and communities everywhere.

A number of specific proposals for cap and share exist, which all share certain key features:

1. A carbon cap on the extraction and/or importation of fossil fuels that reduces briskly towards zero 

2. No offsets: tree-planting and other beneficial activities are as well as, not instead of, limiting fossil fuel

3. A carbon charge applied to companies that extract or import fossil fuels

4. Cash dividends that are paid out directly to people

5. Further mechanisms that address climate justice, global justice and intergenerational justice

6. Citizen oversight: a meaningful management role for the people of the world
